In short, Shakespeare invented our understanding of ourselves. ![]() How to understand Shakespeare, whose ability so far exceeds his predecessors and successors, whose genius has defied generations of critics’ explanations, whose work is of greater influence in the modern age even than the Bible? This book is a visionary summation of Harold Bloom’s reading of Shakespeare and in it he expounds a brilliant and far-reaching critical theory: that Shakespeare was, through his dramatic characters, the inventor of human personality as we have come to understand it. In this magisterial interpretation, Bloom explains Shakespeare’s genius in a radical and provocative re-reading of the plays. ![]() Harold Bloom, the doyen of American literary critics and author of The Western Canon, has spent a professional lifetime reading, writing about and teaching Shakespeare. ![]()

But what’s far worse is that “any publicity is good publicity” can be used to rationalize the airing of obnoxious and downright oppressive coverage – it gets put to use in a misguided, if sometimes well-intentioned, attempt to harmonize what is unharmonious. It doesn’t take long to find an example or two to show that this adage, which speaks in such absolutes, doesn’t hold up. So why do I choose to publicly share all my reviews? It’s definitely not because I believe that any publicity is good publicity. Not a bad idea, but it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting after Epic. Where Epic took place primarily in a fantasy MMORPG crossed with a developing hardscrabble world, Saga takes place in a cyberpunk game that blurs the boundaries between real and virtual, and explores the concepts of artificial intelligence and self-awareness. Thoughts: After rereading the first book of the series, Epic to prepare myself for Saga, I still was unprepared for the dramatic shift in tone and setting between the two different novels. And she’ll succeed unless Ghost and her friends-and Erik, from Epic, and his friends-figure out what to do. The Dark Queen who controls Saga is trying to enslave both its people and the people of New Earth. It is a sentient computer game, the replacement to Epic on New Earth, and it’s addictive. That is, until they learn the complicated truth: Saga is not just their world. When they realize that their world-Saga-is being periodically invaded by strange human beings, they don’t know what to do. Summary: (Taken from GoodReads) The breathtaking sequel to the multistarred Epic! Ghost is part of a street hacker airboard gang who lives to break rules. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, the collection may include only nine stories, but in each of them, Brinkley gives us an entire world. It also deals in family relationships, love, aging, loss, and disappointment - the universal themes that keep us coming back to literature - while also conveying versions of black male experience. And while it's clearly a topic that concerns him, Brinkley's book isn't only about masculinity. And this is the line Brinkley knows how to straddle, creating fully formed characters who wrestle with what they think they have a right to. There's a fine line between outright, blatant, or malicious sexism and this more comfortable, seemingly less offensive place where men are merely ignorant of the ways they take possession of women - their looks, their labor, their humanity. the collection is intent on recognizing what masculinity looks like, questioning our expectations of it, and criticizing its toxicity - and somehow managing to do all of that with love. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Mahbubani’s paradoxical conclusion is that “a major geopolitical contest between America and China is both inevitable and avoidable.” He fears a great and unnecessary tragedy coming from the geopolitical contest between America and China, a contest which has only been aggravated by COVID-19. And his latest book, Has China Won? The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy, certainly does not disappoint, even though it does not squarely answer the title’s question.
